i would look on KEH for higher end Rebels, like T2i or newer, and for a better lense to go with it. The kit lenses are mediocre to me, Im just not satisfied with their results often.

The 75-300 is pretty meh as far as lenses go., and isn't the most useful range. The XSI is pretty old at this point. I'd look for something a bit newer (the T2i suggestion isn't a bad one) with either the 18-55 or no lens.

What about at $250?

I would probably pay like $150-200 max for all that stuff together. It's fairly dated gear, and that lens really isn't something impressive.

You'll outgrow the capabilities of the camera very quickly and want a little more. A T2i or T3i will be far better for you in the long run.

Is there a reason you're so itching for a 75-300 though? That's my big question. I have a hefty 120-400 lens, and I'll be honest, I don't use it as much as I thought I would at this point.

Lets go back to the basics, what do you see as your primary uses for the camera? Are you going to car shows, taking pictures at races, just general all around stuff?

The reason I am itching for this is more or less my desire to spend a bit less for a decent set up. There is only about 1 or 2 DSLR's hitting the local Kijiji every week, and this is the most recent one. I recently won a BestBuy gift card for $100 so I was looking at a T3i or a T5. Both come with the standard lens.

I would likely just be using it for general use, nature, some car stuff, etc.

I'm not really looking at becoming a pro or anything, just want better pictures than the phone can offer.

If you can buy a T3i or a T5 and get the body only, I would invest more in a non-kit lens. I have never been satisfied with results from most kit lenses I've used, and I actually don't even own any kit lenses anymore. I only have Sigma lenses, and 3 of them were bought used, and I haven't had any problems with any of them. I got a 28-70mm, 10-20mm and 50mm all used or display models, never had a single problem with any of them.

A newer body will simply be more capable. Higher shutter speeds, faster image processing for burst or successive images, and the colors will look much better. The difference in color from my T1i to my 7D was such a massive jump. Photos taken with the 7D are immediately apparent to me, as the T1i image sensor just isn't up to snuff anymore. I will use it for a timelapse still, because it's a great little workhorse that just keeps going, but overall, I don't really use it for any important images unless I've gone through all the batteries for my 7D (which I haven't managed to do yet).

The 50mm F1.4 is a fantastically soft lens, and makes me move around to get the correct shot, something that's great to learn with. You can even pick up an older 50mm EF mount for fairly cheap. Mine was about $350 or so, but I was very dead set on 1.4 and Sigma.

Regardless, I wouldn't really settle for anything less than a T2i just for the better image quality and color, and if you can get a body only, it opens the door for you to pick a better quality lens to start with. For basic general use, it will suit you far better because the results will be much better right off the bat.

Would it be a good deal if I could get it all for 150?

I guess? $150 for the whole lot of gear you're getting is okay. The gear itself is okay.

From your starting budget idea of $350, you could get a very good used T2i body with a little extra. Then, if you extended the budget about another $120 from there, you can pick up a good Sigma 18-200mm. Better body, better glass. Yes, about $500 together, but I think it would last you a bit longer and have better results.

In the end, for $150, it's a fair price for the XSi and 75-300. My go-to lens is my 10-20, with my next choice being a 50 1.4. If you're only getting a 75-300, know that you're going to have to take a few more steps back comparatively to be able to frame things similarly to a shorter lens, and you'll have less depth of field. Some people like that style, some don't. That's up to you, but I don't think I would start off with a 75-300, that's something to move to later on when you're more comfortable with the camera, and have more experience framing things.

Seems a tad high to me. I got a Rebel XTi (The one just before this) with 3 batteries, a $50 case, a 28-80MM lens and all the original packaging for $180.
